Data Validation for Public Service now Underway

09 Sept 2004 On 09 September 2004, Mr Liborio Pereira, Director of the Public Services announced that the Data Validation Project, a component of the UNDP Project called 'HRM', is now gathering and validating 12000 personnel records as a prelude to the installation of the Personnel Management Information Systems.

Mr Pereira intends to broadcast in the national media that from now on every civil servant must submit their personnel records to the National Directorate of Public Services. Senior representatives and advisers from JICA, UN and UNDP attended the Inception Report Meeting at INAP Campus chaired by Dr. Florindo Pereira, National Project Director of the UNDP Project HRM. New Justice Training Centre Opens

07 Sept 2004 The opening of the Justice Training Centre on 07 September, 2004 marks an important milestone in the development of the Justice Sector in this young nation.

In his address at the opening ceremony the Special Representative of the Secretary General and UNDP Resident Representative, Sukehiro Hasegawa, commended the opening.

"The establishment of the National Judicial Training Centre is another significant and commendable step on the part of the Council of Coordination of the judicial system. The formal opening of the National Judicial Training Centre signifies a move forward for the national justice system from the total devastation from five years ago." he said. Full Story

Strengthening parliamentary Democracy
Australia and UNDP Partner with US$800,000 agreement

27 August, 2004 - The new Australian Ambassador Ms Margaret Twomey and the SRSG and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative, Sukehiro Hasegawa attended an informal ceremony to sign a donation for US$800,000 to support the implementation of the "Strengthening Parliamentary Democracy in Timor-Leste" project.

The project, which is currently being implemented by the National Parliament with support from UNDP, will cost US$2 million dollars and run for 3 years. The overall aim is to improve the institutional capacity of the elected members (Deputies) and the in-house civil service (The Secretariat).Full story

Dili's Street Children To Be Given A New Chance
13 May 2004 - A mobile learning centre will take to the streets of Dili on Monday (17 May 2004) in an attempt to give homeless children a chance of starting a new life.

An 'Activity Bus', colourfully painted by artists from Timor-Leste's Arte Moris (meaning Living Art) Cultural Centre, will be used as the mobile learning centre to connect with the children and youth at risk. The 'Activity Bus' will also carrying onboard a series of educational programmes and activities aimed at parents as well as children and youth at risk. Full story

Timor-Leste's Photographers Take On International Market
4 May 2004 - For the first time, the work of some of Timor-Leste's leading photographers has been showcased at an exhibition, which opened in Dili on Thursday, 29 April 2004.

Koneksi embodies the work of nine freelance and photo-journalists from two national publications - the Timor Post and Talitakum. This mentoring and exhibition project, which was funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme and implemented by Internews, ran over a two-month period whereby the photographers attended weekly workshops covering all aspects of photography. Opening Of New Administration Building At Becora Prison
24 April 2004 - Completely destroyed by fire in 2002, a newly built Becora Prison Administration building was opened by the Prime Minister of Timor-Leste and the Ambassador of Denmark on Tuesday, 20 April 2004.

The inauguration of the newly constructed building also coincided with the commencement of a second training course for 23 new prison guards. Full story

Human Rights Day - UN Acknowledges Efforts of Timorese
10 December 2003 - To commemorate Human Rights Day on 10 December 2003, the United Nations system is awarding several UN Human Rights Awards 2003 to various non-governmental and community based organizations, as well as to individuals for their contribution in promoting human rights in Timor-Leste in the last year. New Water Supply System To Improve Health Conditions
